#GirlsWithKnives Spotlight: Gelato Extraordinaire Mary Lemmer

Mary Lemmer is the current owner/founder of Iorio’s Gelateria, but she’s been in the gelato business since she was 13 years old! Iorio’s began in 2004 when Mary and her brother Nick decided to bring Philly’s iconic summer treat, Italian ice, to their home in Michigan. When the business took off, Mary decided to pay homage to her family’s Italian heritage by adding gelato and other treats to the Iorio’s menu.

What has been a defining moment in your culinary career?

Working at Zingerman’s [gourmet food store in Ann Arbor], for its founder Ari, where I learned more about ingredients, flavor, food, and business than anywhere else.

What ladies serve up culinary inspiration in your life?

Eve Aronoff: Top Chef, fellow Michigander, & creator of the Cuban concept Frita Batidos, that serves up delicious, authentic food in a stunningly designed environment.

What advice do you have for other women trying to build culinary careers?

Find mentors and don’t give up when others put you down!

    this is so cool, we’ve probably enjoyed your creations Mary. We love Zingerman’s and Ann Arbor. When we would visit our daughter in Saline we often went in for take out or dessert and coffee – congrats on the #girlswithknives spotlight
