What has been a defining moment in your culinary career?

You know, I don’t know if I have much in the way of defining moments. The main defining moment was when I decided to begin blogging. That set all the wheels in motion, and I still feel like I’m just moving. I’ve never really stopped to consider any one moment.

Which ladies serve up culinary inspiration in your life?

  • Duskie Estes of Black Pig Meat Company is a legit badass in food. Her bacon is THE BEST. She loves life. She has great energy.
  • Vivien Straus of Straus Family Creamery has built her company to become one of the most respected dairies in the area. She does it all with such good humor and grace.
  • The ladies of the Giacomini Family, owners of Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese, have built their cheese empire on the power of sisterhood and family. They all had careers before coming back to the farm so that their land and their business could remain in the family.
  • Erika Scharfen of Pennyroyal Cheese is making AMAZING cheese by Mendocino, and she has served the cheese community so much.

What advice do you have for women trying to build culinary careers?

Just do it. No fear! Work on your own terms, know what you are comfortable with. And don’t let anyone tell you what you can or cannot do. You have valuable gifts to share with the world.
